Porga Wildlife Reserve (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

Porga Wildlife Reserve, established in 1976, spans approximately 1,500 square kilometers of Sudano-Sahelian savanna in northeastern Burkina Faso. It borders the Pendjari River, which forms the natural boundary with Benin. The reserve is part of the larger WAP (W-Arly-Pendjari) complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate and one of West Africa's last strongholds for large mammals. Key species include African elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and several antelope species. The reserve is notorious for its inaccessibility; only a few dirt roads exist, and visitor facilities are minimal. The dry season (November to May) provides the best wildlife viewing. Conservation efforts focus on anti-poaching patrols and community-based natural resource management.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season (November-April) is handy as animals are concentrated around water sources. In the rainy season the terrain is often difficult and fauna scattered.
🌅
Best time of day
The twilight hours of morning and evening are most productive. At these times the heat is less intense and animals are more actively foraging.
📜
Etiquette
Keep distance, remain quiet, and do not feed animals. Leaving vehicles is only allowed at designated spots.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars, sun hat, and plenty of water are indispensable. Long-sleeved clothing protects against sunburn and insect bites.
🧭
Getting there
Access is usually via unpaved tracks requiring good ground clearance. It is highly recommended to travel with a guide who knows the area.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife watching requires a lot of patience - stay calm in one spot. Often animals appear suddenly when you least expect it.
