It originates on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains near the Hadzhi Dimitar peak and flows through a series of dramatic gorges before entering the Danubian Plain. This unique natural terrain made Veliko Tarnovo an almost impregnable stronghold and the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the Middle Ages.
