Basarbovo Monastery is the only active rock-hewn monastery in Bulgaria, located in the scenic valley of the Rusenski Lom River, near the city of Ruse. Founded in the 15th century, it is dedicated to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski, a local shepherd who lived there as a monk. The monastery's chapel and cells are carved directly into the steep limestone cliffs, accessible via a flight of 48 rock-cut stairs. A notable feature is the well in the courtyard, which according to legend was dug by the saint himself and is believed to have healing properties. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, the relics of Saint Dimitar were moved to Bucharest, where they are now kept in the Patriarchal Cathedral. This historical link makes the monastery a significant pilgrimage site for both Bulgarians and Romanians. The site is a remarkable example of medieval cave architecture and spiritual devotion set within a beautiful natural reserve.
