Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are a group of monolithic churches, chapels, and monasteries carved into the high rocky banks of the Rusenski Lom River in northern Bulgaria. This complex was established in the 12th century by hermits and significantly expanded during the 14th century under the patronage of the Bulgarian Tsars of the Second Empire. The site is globally renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved frescoes, which are considered masterpieces of Palaeologan art and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Particularly notable is the Church of the Holy Virgin, whose murals exhibit realistic depictions and a sense of depth unusual for the Middle Ages. The frescoes portray biblical scenes and portraits of historical figures, such as Tsar Ivan Alexander. At its peak, the area contained over 40 churches and around 300 monk cells, interconnected by stone stairs and tunnels. Today, these churches stand as a significant monument to the spiritual and artistic zenith of medieval Bulgaria.
