Shipka Pass Memorial (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Shipka Pass Memorial, also known as the Monument to Liberty, stands on Stoletov Peak in the Balkan Mountains and is Bulgaria's most significant national shrine. It commemorates the decisive battles at Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), where Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops successfully defended the pass, paving the way for Bulgaria's independence. The monument was inaugurated on August 26, 1934, and takes the form of a massive stone tower standing 31.5 meters tall. Guarding the main entrance is a massive bronze lion, 8 meters long and 4 meters high, the symbol of the Bulgarian nation. Inside the monument, there is a sarcophagus containing the remains of fallen soldiers and a museum showcasing weapons, uniforms, and medals from the conflict. The top platform features an extensive panoramic view of the Valley of Roses and northern Bulgaria. Every year on March 3rd, Bulgaria's National Day, thousands gather here for solemn memorial ceremonies.
