Bozhentsi (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Bozhentsi is an architectural and historical reserve in the heart of the Central Balkan Mountains, near Gabrovo. Legend says the village was founded over 600 years ago by the noblewoman Bozhana, who sought refuge here after the Ottoman conquest of Tarnovo. Today, the village is almost perfectly preserved in the Bulgarian National Revival style, featuring around 100 listed houses with white facades and heavy black stone roofs. The village is a sanctuary for those seeking peace and lovers of traditional aesthetics. Narrow cobblestone (kaldarma) streets wind past flower-filled gardens and small craft shops. Notable sights include the Prophet Elijah Church with its precious icons and the old school, which now functions as a museum. Bozhentsi is also famous for its honey production and traditional sweets like pestil (plum leather). Hikers will find numerous marked trails leading through beech forests to neighboring villages or to the town of Tryavna. The atmosphere is magical year-round, especially in winter when snow blankets the slate roofs. Access is via a narrow asphalt road from Gabrovo. Several cozy guest houses offer authentic Bulgarian hospitality on-site.
