The Samokov region, located in the Rila Mountains, has been the epicenter of Bulgarian potato cultivation for nearly two centuries. At an altitude of approximately 950 meters, the area's unique soil and climatic conditions produce potatoes of exceptional quality and distinct flavor. The history of this agricultural tradition dates back to 1835, when the first potato seeds were introduced by Greek and Serbian traders. Today, the "Samokov potato" is a recognized domestic brand, symbolizing the harmony between traditional farming methods and modern agronomic science. The city is home to a specialized research institute established in 1951, dedicated to the preservation and breeding of resilient potato varieties. Agriculture remains the backbone of the regional economy, supporting numerous family-run farms across the fertile mountain valleys. Annually, thousands of tons of table and seed potatoes are harvested and distributed throughout Bulgaria. The cool alpine summers and high-altitude environment provide a natural defense against pests, ensuring high-quality organic yields.
