Saint Nedelya Church Sofia (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Saint Nedelya Cathedral is one of the central spiritual symbols of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. The history of the site dates back to the 10th century, though its current monumental appearance is the result of major reconstructions in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A dark chapter in Bulgarian history took place here on April 16, 1925, when the church was the target of a devastating bombing by communist activists; the attack resulted in over 150 deaths and severe damage to the structure. In the subsequent years, the cathedral was rebuilt in its present form under the direction of architect Ivan Vasiliev, featuring its characteristic 30-meter-high dome. The interior is striking for its spacious design and the murals created between 1971 and 1973 by a team led by Nikolay Rostovtsev. The church also houses the relics of the Serbian King Stefan Milutin, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Given its location right on the city's central square, it is an essential part of any tour through Sofia's historical center.
