Rozhen Monastery (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Rozhen Monastery is the largest monastery in the Pirin Mountains, located near the town of Melnik and its famous sand pyramids. It was likely founded in the 13th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire, though most current buildings date from the 16th and 18th centuries. The main church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin, is renowned for its 1732 frescoes and a masterfully carved wooden iconostasis. A unique feature is the stained glass windows from 1715, which are among the oldest in the Balkans. The monastery served as a significant spiritual and cultural center during the Bulgarian National Revival and was closely linked to revolutionary movements in Macedonia. The tomb of the famous Bulgarian revolutionary Yane Sandanski is located just outside the monastery walls. Its traditional architecture, featuring closed wooden balconies and stone-paved courtyards, reflects the local Melnik style. Today, it remains one of Bulgaria's most significant cultural and historical landmarks.
