Mausoleum of Alexander I of Battenberg (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Battenberg Mausoleum in Sofia is the final resting place of Alexander I of Battenberg, the first Prince of modern Bulgaria after its liberation from Ottoman rule. The structure was built between 1895 and 1897 in a Neoclassical style, following the designs of Swiss architect Hermann Mayer. The mausoleum is characterized by its simple elegance, a prominent dome, and a white marble facade. Alexander I, who reigned from 1879 to 1886, explicitly requested to be buried in Bulgaria, emphasizing his deep connection to the nation he helped build. During the Communist era (1946-1991), the mausoleum was closed to the public and repurposed for other uses. Following the fall of the regime, it was renovated and reopened as a national monument in 1991. Located in central Sofia, it now serves as a place of remembrance for the beginnings of modern Bulgarian statehood and its first sovereign.
