Bistritsa Forest (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Bistrishko Branishte Biosphere Reserve is located on the northeastern slopes of Vitosha Mountain, in close proximity to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. Established in 1934, it is one of the oldest protected areas in the country and has been part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 1977. The reserve covers an area of approximately 1061 hectares and is primarily dedicated to the preservation of pristine subalpine spruce forests that thrive without human intervention. Geologically, the area is defined by its striking stone rivers, which are massive accumulations of rounded syenite boulders characteristic of the Vitosha massif. Altitudes within the reserve range from 1430 to 2277 meters above sea level, with the Golyam Rezen peak serving as a prominent boundary. The flora includes rare mountain plants, while the fauna provides a sanctuary for brown bears, wolves, and numerous species of birds of prey. Scientifically, the area is of great importance for studying natural forest succession processes following storms and insect outbreaks.
