Dryanovo Monastery (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Dryanovo Monastery, dedicated to the Holy Archangel Michael, is picturesquely situated in the valley of the Andaka River, surrounded by the towering limestone cliffs of the Balkan Mountains. Founded in the 12th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire, it was located near the residence of Tsars Asen and Peter. The monastery has a turbulent history, having been destroyed several times by Ottoman forces before being permanently rebuilt at its current site in 1845. During the April Uprising of 1876, it served as a strategic fortress for Bulgarian revolutionaries led by Bacho Kiro and Priest Hariton, who withstood a massive Ottoman siege for nine days. The walls of the current monastery church still bear bullet holes from this heroic struggle. Adjacent to the monastery is the famous Bacho Kiro cave, which contains some of the earliest evidence of human habitation in Europe. Today, the monastery remains a significant spiritual center and a national historical monument.
