Tariquía Nature Reserve (Bolivia)

Weather…

The Tariquía National Flora and Fauna Reserve is located in the southeast of the Tarija Department and was established in 1989 to protect the unique Tucumano-Boliviano forests. Covering an area of approximately 246,870 hectares, the reserve encompasses a complex system of mountains, valleys, and rivers that are strategically important for the water supply of the Tarija region. The vegetation ranges from sub-montane rainforests to high-altitude puna vegetation in the summit regions. Protected animal species include the Andean condor, the spectacled bear, and the endangered Tucumán Amazon parrot. In addition to its ecological significance, the reserve is home to local farming communities practicing traditional agriculture. In recent years, the area has been at the center of national environmental debates due to planned hydrocarbon exploration that could jeopardize the sensitive ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October provides the best conditions for spotting jaguars and tapirs in Tariquía Nature Reserve. Vegetation is sparser and animals gather at remaining water sources.
🌅
Best time of day
Jaguars are crepuscular and most often seen early morning or just before sunset. Tapirs are nocturnal, so late evening hours or guided night hikes are promising.
📜
Etiquette
Move quietly and stay on trails to avoid startling shy predators. Do not feed animals or leave food scraps, as this may cause conflicts.
🎒
What to bring
A bright binocular and a camera with night vision capability or a good sensor are advantageous. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and insect repellent against mosquitoes and ticks are essential.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is in the Andean foothills of southern Bolivia and is typically reachable from the city of Tarija with a 4x4 vehicle. Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended.
🦌
What to expect
Jaguars are very rare and hard to spot - most visitors do not see one. Focus on the rich birdlife and tapir tracks while quietly waiting at waterholes.
