Visiting
The sanctuary is open to visitors during the day, both for pilgrims and tourists. The interior is richly decorated and freely accessible, except during Mass.
Typical hours
The church is typically open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a lunch break. During the Oruro Carnival the hours are greatly extended.
Photography
Photography inside is allowed, but without flash to protect the paintings and gold leaf. Outside, the square in front of the church has a good view of the facade.
Time needed
A visit takes about 45 minutes to an hour to see the sanctuary and its art treasures. During the carnival, the visit may last longer due to festivities.
Combine with
Combine the visit with exploring the city of Oruro, especially the ethnographic museum. The nearby Cerro Pie de Gallo mountain gives hiking opportunities.
Getting there
Oruro is about 230 km south of La Paz, reachable by bus or car. The sanctuary is in the city center, near the main square.
