Lake Poopó (Bolivia)

Weather…

Lake Poopó was formerly Bolivia's second-largest lake, situated on the Altiplano in the Oruro Department at an altitude of 3,686 meters. As an endorheic saline lake, its primary water source was the Desaguadero River, which flows from Lake Titicaca. Over recent decades, the lake has faced a massive ecological crisis, leading to its near-total disappearance by late 2015 due to climate change, persistent droughts, and water diversion for mining and irrigation. Its shallow average depth of only 3 meters made it extremely susceptible to high evaporation rates typical of the high-altitude Andean environment. The lake's drying has had devastating impacts on the indigenous Uru-Murato people, who for centuries relied on fishing for their survival. While seasonal rains occasionally bring back a thin layer of water, the once-thriving ecosystem that supported thousands of flamingos and fish species has been severely compromised. Geologically, Lake Poopó is considered a remnant of the prehistoric Lake Minchin, which covered the Altiplano during the Pleistocene.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Getting to the remnants of this former lake involves traveling across the arid altiplano plains south of Oruro, typically requiring a private off-road vehicle to navigate the surrounding dusty tracks.
📅
Best season
Travel is generally easiest during the dry season from May to October, though the landscape remains a stark, dry basin year-round due to the profound environmental changes and ongoing water diversion.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
What was once a massive body of water is now predominantly a vast, desolate expanse of cracked mud, salt crusts, and dry sediment, presenting a flat but occasionally treacherous surface.
🎒
What to bring
Sun protection, a wide-brimmed hat, and a sturdy windbreaker are necessary for the exposed plains, while carrying ample drinking water is critical since local water sources have largely vanished.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles can usually be parked on the stable margins of the former lakebed or near the small, affected fishing communities that still exist on the periphery of this environmental disaster zone.
⚠️
Safety
Travelers should be cautious of the intense sun and potential dust storms sweeping across the dried basin; sticking to established tracks is advised to avoid getting stuck in hidden soft mud.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit is primarily educational and observational, typically lasting one to two hours to witness the scale of the dried lakebed and understand the profound impact of climate change on the region.
