The Zwin Dunes and Polders nature reserve, located in the municipality of Knokke-Heist, covers an area of approximately 222 hectares along the Belgian coast. The area is characterized by its unique salt-tolerant vegetation, such as sea lavender and glasswort, which thrive in the tidal mudflats and salt marshes of the adjacent Zwin inlet. Historically, the Zwin was a major maritime gateway to the city of Bruges during the Middle Ages, but gradual silting led to the formation of the current landscape. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the main migration times for waders and waterfowl in the Zwin. Summer sees many species nesting in the dunes and polders, while winter is mainly for resting ducks and geese.

At high tide, birds come closer to the observation hides, so plan your visit according to the tides. Dusk is especially atmospheric when masses of birds fly in or depart.

Do not leave the designated paths and observation hides to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Avoid noise and sudden movements, as the birds are very sensitive to disturbance.

A spotting scope is especially useful here to identify distant birds on the sandbanks. Good walking boots are important as the paths are often sandy and uneven.

The Zwin is easily reached by car from the coastal road N34; a large car park is at the visitor centre. The reserve is also well served by bus from Knokke-Heist.
