Provincial Domain De Gavers (Belgium)

Weather…

The Provincial Domain De Gavers, situated between Harelbeke and Deerlijk in West Flanders, serves as a remarkable textbook example of transforming a massive industrial excavation site into an indispensable ecological and recreational haven. The 192-hectare estate is completely dominated by a massive 60-hectare lake. This vast body of water is not natural; it was aggressively excavated in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a massive sand quarry to provide the astronomical amounts of building material required to construct the nearby E17 highway. Once the excavation ceased, natural groundwater rapidly filled the deep crater. Today, De Gavers functions as the primary green oasis for the densely populated South-West Flanders region. A significant portion of the domain is partitioned off as a highly protected nature reserve, serving as a critical breeding and resting site for waterfowl, notably sustaining a large population of great crested grebes. Simultaneously, the domain is a hub for low-impact recreation, featuring swimming beaches, dedicated sailing zones, adventure playgrounds, and a comprehensive paved trail network circumventing the lake.
