Izegem is an industrious and tradition-rich city in the heart of the West Flanders province, located on the banks of the Mandel River and the Roeselare-Leie Canal. The city proudly bears the nickname "Pekkersstad," derived from the pitch (pek) that was formerly used in the manufacture of shoes. Indeed, Izegem achieved world fame in the 19th and 20th centuries through its fine shoemaking and its flourishing brush industry; products from Izegem were considered internationally as the epitome of the highest craftsmanship quality. The modern Eperon d'Or Museum, housed in a breathtakingly restored Art Deco shoe factory, documents this rich industrial heritage in a fascinating way. In addition, the photogenic city center features several architectural highlights, such as Wallemote Castle and the impressive St. Hilonius Church, which enrich the city's historical panorama.
