Menin Gate (Belgium)

Weather…

The Menin Gate in Ypres is one of the most prominent memorials on the Western Front, dedicated to the tens of thousands of British Empire soldiers who fell in the Ypres Salient during World War I and have no known grave. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and unveiled in 1927, the Roman triumphal arch-style structure spans the road along which countless troops marched toward the frontline. The interior walls of the vast Hall of Memory are inscribed with the names of 54,896 missing soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth nations who lost their lives before August 16, 1917. Since 1928, with the sole exception of the German occupation during World War II, buglers from the local volunteer fire brigade have played the 'Last Post' every evening at exactly 8:00 PM. This deeply moving musical ceremony continues to preserve the memory of their immense sacrifice and the devastating reality of trench warfare.
