Menen (Menin) is a historically strategic border city in the province of West Flanders, located right on the border with France and forming a cross-border agglomeration with the French city of Halluin. Due to its strategic location on the Leie (Lys) river, the city was a coveted military outpost throughout the centuries and was massively fortified in the 17th century by the famous fortress builder Vauban. Parts of these impressive bastions, such as the preserved casemates, can still be explored today and bear witness to a turbulent past. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Menen benefited greatly from the region's flourishing textile and flax industry. The imposing neoclassical town hall, with its octagonal belfry recognized by UNESCO, dominates the city's central Grote Markt.
