Gravensteen Castle (Belgium)

Weather…

Gravensteen Castle, also known as the Castle of the Counts, is an outstanding example of medieval military architecture situated in the heart of Ghent. The imposing stone structure seen today was constructed in 1180 by Philip of Alsace on the foundations of an earlier 9th-century wooden fortress. The castle served as the seat of the powerful Counts of Flanders until 1353, projecting their authority over the often rebellious citizens of Ghent. After ceasing to be a noble residence, the fortress fulfilled various roles, functioning as a mint, a court of justice, and a dreaded prison, before briefly becoming a cotton spinning mill during the industrial revolution. A comprehensive restoration program at the end of the 19th century saved the building from demolition, reinstating its romanticized medieval appearance complete with battlements, arrow slits, and a sturdy keep. Today, the site houses an extensive collection of historical weapons and torture devices.
