Lochristi is a Flemish municipality in the province of East Flanders, world-renowned for its highly developed floriculture. Located northeast of Ghent, countless greenhouses define the landscape, where mainly azaleas and begonias are cultivated for export. This specialization began in the 19th century and made the region one of the most important floricultural centers in Europe. A cultural highlight is the annual begonia exhibition, during which the town is decorated with artistic flower carpets. Historically, Lochristi was closely linked to the lordship of Ghent, reflected in several historical manor houses and the neo-Gothic architecture of St. Nicholas Church. In recent decades, the municipality has developed into a wealthy residential area, benefiting from its proximity to the Ghent port area and excellent transport links. Despite economic growth, great emphasis is placed on preserving the open agricultural landscape. Lochristi is also known for its active community life and a wide gastronomic range integrating regional products. The combination of a thriving economy and high quality of life makes the town an attractive destination in Flanders.
