Evergem is an extensive and versatile municipality in East Flanders, stretching north of the city of Ghent. Geographically and economically, the region is heavily influenced by the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and the adjacent Ghent port area (North Sea Port), making Evergem a highly important logistics and industrial center. Despite the dense industrial infrastructure in certain areas, Evergem has preserved its rural and historical character. This is evidenced by the magnificent 19th-century Wippelgem Castle, situated in a beautiful public park, and the impressive moated castle of Gerkenberg. In addition, the municipality is known for the Motte castle in Ertvelde, a remarkable medieval fortification. The photogenic banks of the canal and the vast polder landscapes offer excellent opportunities for cyclists and hikers to enjoy Flemish nature.
