Castle of Houthulst (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Houthulst, often referred to as Kasteel de Groote, is located on the edge of the Vrijbos forest in West Flanders, a region marked by intense historical significance. The original manor was entirely obliterated during the fierce combat of World War I, specifically during the 11th-century Battle of the Houthulst Forest in 1918. Following the armistice, the castle was meticulously rebuilt in an eclectic style with neoclassical elements, serving as a symbol of the post-war recovery of the local nobility. The surrounding estate was once part of one of Flanders' largest ancient forests, which in medieval times served as a hunting ground and later as a hideout for outlaws. During the Second World War, the structure suffered further damage under military occupation but has since been maintained in its current elegant form. Today, the castle remains a private residence, surrounded by a expansive park with mature trees, standing as a quiet monument to the Belgian architectural rebirth.
