Located in the west of Flanders near the coast, Veurne is an architectural gem. The Grote Markt (Grand Market Square) is considered one of the most beautiful in Belgium and is an impressive ensemble of buildings in the Spanish-Flemish Renaissance style. Here you'll find the magnificent Stadhuis (Town Hall) and the adjacent Landshuis (former courthouse), crowned by the imposing Belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The atmosphere of the square transports visitors directly back to the region's Golden Age. Another unique event is the Boeteprocessie (Procession of the Penitents), which takes place on the last Sunday of July. In this procession, deeply rooted in tradition, hooded penitents walk barefoot through the streets, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot. Besides the market square, the Walburga Church and the town park are also worth a visit. Culinarily, Veurne is known for its local specialities, including the 'Veurnse Meringuetaart'. It is easy to get to by train from Bruges or Ghent, and its proximity to the North Sea coast makes it a convenient destination for a day trip or as part of a tour of Flanders. The best time to visit is in summer, especially at the end of July to experience the famous procession.
