Beringein Coal Mine Site (Belgium)

Weather…

The Beringen coal mine in the province of Limburg was one of the seven sites of the Campine coal basin and shaped the region's economy for decades. Production began in 1922 and reached its peak in the 1950s before the mine was closed in 1989, the penultimate Belgian mine to do so. Today, the site operates under the name be-MINE and represents the largest industrial heritage ensemble in Flanders, having undergone extensive revitalization. The architecture of the mining buildings, particularly the washrooms and the power plant, is a significant witness to the industrial modernism of the early 20th century. The area now includes a mining museum, a diving center in the former settling ponds, climbing halls, and retail spaces. Through this repurposing, the social history of the mining culture has been preserved while simultaneously creating new economic impulses for the city of Beringen. The listed buildings cover an area of several hectares and demonstrate the technological development of coal processing and industrial logistics of the era.
