Old Gymnasium Slutsk (Belarus)

Weather…

The Old Gymnasium in Slutsk is the oldest continuously operating educational institution in Belarus and a monument of national significance. It was founded in 1617 by Prince Janusz Radziwill as a Calvinist school and quickly developed into a major intellectual center of Eastern Europe, known as the 'Athens of Slutsk.' The current main building was constructed between 1827 and 1838 in the Neoclassical style, based on designs by the architect Karol Podczaszyński. The architecture is notable for its monumental portico with Doric columns and a clear, functional internal layout. Over the centuries, the gymnasium was a site of intercultural encounter and produced numerous famous scientists, writers, and politicians. Despite political upheavals and wars, the tradition of educational excellence has been maintained at this location. Today, the building houses a modern gymnasium that proudly looks back on its more than 400-year history. The facade and historical rooms have been carefully restored to preserve the authentic character of this educational monument.
