Berezina Lowland (Belarus)

Weather…

The Berezina Lowland is an extensive, low-lying plain in eastern central Belarus, stretching along both sides of the Berezina River. Geologically, it is defined as a limno-glacial and alluvial depression filled with meltwater and sediment deposits following the retreat of Pleistocene glaciers. The relief is extremely flat, with elevations ranging between 130 and 160 meters, which, combined with clayey subsoils, leads to significant waterlogging. A substantial portion of the lowland is covered by vast alder swamps, peat bogs, and marshy meadows that host unique flora and fauna. The area is particularly famous for the Berezina Biosphere Reserve, one of Europe's oldest protected areas, established in 1925. This wilderness region acts as a natural filter for the river and plays a crucial role in regional climate protection. Due to soil conditions, human activity is primarily limited to forestry and small-scale beekeeping.
