Arad Fort (Bahrain)

Weather…

Arad Fort is strategically located on Muharraq Island, in close proximity to Bahrain International Airport. The fortress was originally constructed in the 15th century in a typical Islamic military style, with its origins often attributed to Omani invaders or local Bedouin tribes. During the 16th century, it was briefly occupied by the Portuguese before eventually falling under the control of the Al-Khalifa dynasty. The structure features a square layout with four massive cylindrical towers at each corner, connected by thick curtain walls. Between 1980 and 1987, the fort underwent an extensive restoration process using only traditional materials such as coral stone, lime, and sand to maintain its historical integrity. Today, the fort serves as a prominent cultural landmark and is beautifully illuminated at night. It provides a significant look into the defensive architecture of the region prior to the discovery of oil.
