Ossiach is located on the southern shore of the lake of the same name and is the cultural center of the region. The imposing Ossiach Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery with a Baroque church, defines the village. Today, the abbey houses the Carinthian Music Academy and is the main venue for the Carinthian Summer, one of Austria's most significant music festivals. Lake Ossiach is known for its excellent water quality and pleasant swimming temperatures in summer. From Ossiach, a passenger ferry crosses to the north shore, where the Kanzelbahn cable car leads up to the Gerlitzen Alpe, a popular hiking and skiing area. The region is also very popular with campers, hosting some of Europe's top-rated campsites. Culturally, the legend of the Polish King Boleslaus, who supposedly lived here as a silent penitent, is deeply rooted. Culinary highlights include regional delicacies like Lake Ossiach trout. Access is handy via the A10 Tauern or A2 motorway through Villach.
