Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (Armenia)

Weather…

The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, located near the town of the same name in Armavir Province, is a unique and critical facility in Armenia's energy sector. It is the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus region, generating approximately 40% of the country's electricity. Built in the 1970s, the plant consists of two Soviet-designed VVER-440 pressurized water reactors. Following the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, the plant was shut down due to safety concerns. However, facing a severe energy crisis in the early 1990s, the Armenian government decided to restart one of the reactors, Unit 2, which occurred in 1995. The plant's safety has been a persistent concern for the international community, particularly the European Union, due to its location in a seismically active zone and its use of older reactor technology. Despite international pressure, Armenia has extended the plant's operational life, viewing it as indispensable for the country's energy security, while plans are being developed for a new nuclear unit to replace it in the future.
