Echmiadzin Cathedral (Armenia)

Weather…

The Echmiadzin Cathedral is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and is widely considered the oldest cathedral in the world. It was built between 301 and 303 AD by Saint Gregory the Illuminator, shortly after Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion. The name 'Echmiadzin' means 'Descent of the Only-Begotten,' based on a vision where Jesus Christ descended from heaven to strike the ground with a golden hammer, marking the site for the church. Over centuries, the architecture evolved from an original basilica to a cruciform dome structure, adorned with intricate reliefs and frescoes. The cathedral's treasury houses significant relics, including the Holy Lance (Geghard) and a fragment of Noah's Ark. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it remains the spiritual heart for Armenians globally.
