Maquela do Zombo is a historic border town located in the far north of Uíge province, directly on the frontier with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town serves as the cultural heartland of the Zombo people, a subgroup of the Bakongo known for their entrepreneurial spirit and extensive trading networks. During the colonial era, Maquela do Zombo was a significant military and administrative outpost controlling cross-border traffic. Its geography is defined by hilly terrain and lush tropical vegetation, with cross-border trade remaining the primary economic pillar. Despite suffering destruction during the War of Independence, the town has maintained its cultural identity and now acts as a vital gateway for regional commerce. Local agriculture produces peanuts, cassava, and coffee, with exports to the neighboring Congo playing a substantial role. The government is investing in road reconstruction and border infrastructure to fully realize the region's economic potential.
