The Huambo Botanical Park is a historical institution in the central highlands of Angola, established during the colonial era as a scientific center for botany. Located in the provincial capital of Huambo, formerly Nova Lisboa, the park is characterized by an enormous diversity of native and exotic plant species. Its geographical location at nearly 1,700 meters above sea level provides a handy temperate climate for researching highland flora. The park was originally part of an agricultural research center and served the introduction of new useful plants to Angola. Following the destruction of the civil war, the botanical garden was extensively rehabilitated and is once again a center for ecological research and education. It has the population a peaceful space for recreation and serves as a gene bank for the region's endangered tree species. The park's architecture reflects mid-20th-century urban planning, with wide avenues and structured plantings. Modern programs focus on the preservation of the Miombo forest ecosystem, which is typical of the Angolan highlands.
