Dondo Historic Port (Angola)

Weather…

The Dondo Historic Port, situated in the Kwanza Norte Province, was one of the busiest inland commercial hubs in 19th-century Angola. Located on the banks of the Kwanza River, Dondo served as the terminus for steamship navigation and a vital transshipment point for goods arriving from or heading to the highlands. During its peak in the 1880s, the port was a thriving center for the trade of ivory, rubber, and coffee, while also serving as a grim node in the transatlantic slave trade. The town's architecture reflects this former prosperity, featuring colonial trading houses and warehouses that now stand in various states of ruin. With the completion of the Luanda Railway, the port's significance declined as transport shifted to the tracks. Today, Dondo is a site of historical nostalgia, where the riverside ruins tell the story of the Kwanza River's strategic role in the colonial penetration of Central Africa. The annual Dondo Cultural Festival seeks to revive public awareness of the port's historical legacy.
