Laúca Dam (Angola)

Weather…

The Laúca Dam on the Kwanza River is the largest hydroelectric power station in Angola and one of the most powerful facilities in Africa. With a massive installed capacity of over 2,000 megawatts, it serves as the backbone of the country's modern power grid. Inaugurated in 2017, the project represents a technological milestone, allowing Angola to meet much of its energy demand through renewable sources. The dam is a gargantuan structure made of roller-compacted concrete, impounding the river within a deep canyon. The station features six primary turbines plus an additional unit for ecological flow to preserve downstream biodiversity. Since coming online, Laúca has drastically reduced electricity shortages in Luanda and is vital for national industrial growth. The project is also noted for its extensive environmental and social mitigation programs carried out during the construction phase in the region.
