El Kantara Bridge (Algeria)

Weather…

The El Kantara Bridge in Constantine is one of Algeria's most impressive structures, bearing witness to the city's millennia-old history. It spans the spectacular Rhumel Gorge at a height of approximately 125 meters, connecting the historic city center with the modern railway station district. The current bridge was constructed in 1863 during the French colonial period on the ruins of a former Roman bridge, which itself had been repaired by Ottoman rulers in the 18th century. Architecturally, it is an elegant iron construction resting on massive stone pillars anchored deep into the rock. The strategic importance of this crossing was immense even in antiquity, as it represented the only northern entrance to the fortified cliff city. In 1951, the bridge was comprehensively modernized and widened to accommodate increasing traffic volumes. Below the bridge, the steep rock walls of the gorge provide nesting sites for numerous birds and show clear signs of geological erosion over millions of years. Today, the El Kantara Bridge is not only a vital transport route but also a popular photo spot that perfectly captures the dramatic setting of Constantine.
