Constantine, known as the "City of Bridges," is one of Algeria's most sweeping urban centers, perched on a limestone plateau at an altitude of 640 meters in the northeast. The city is dramatically bisected by the Rhumel River canyon, which reaches depths of up to 200 meters, creating a unique and formidable natural landscape. Its history dates back to antiquity when it served as Cirta, the capital of the Numidian Kingdom and a pivotal trade hub. Following its destruction in 311 AD, it was rebuilt by Emperor Constantine the Great in 313 AD, from whom it derives its present name. Eight iconic bridges span the deep chasm, including the Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge, which was the highest in the world upon its completion in 1912. Constantine is a bastion of Islamic scholarship and North African culture, famous for its Malouf music and the ornate Palace of Ahmed Bey, reflecting its Ottoman heritage. Today, it stands as a vital economic and educational hub for eastern Algeria, blending ancient history with industrial growth.
