Hammam Debagh, historically also known as Hammam Meskhoutine, is a unique geological wonder in eastern Algeria near Guelma. The main attraction is the impressive travertine terraces and waterfalls, formed over millennia by the deposition of calcium carbonate from the extremely hot springs. The water here reaches a temperature of up to 98°C, it is one of the hottest waters in the world after the geysers in Iceland. Due to the extreme heat, direct bathing at the springs is impossible; the water is cooled considerably for use in the spa facilities. The place is also shrouded in legends. The name 'Meskhoutine' roughly translates to 'the cursed'. According to an old local legend, the cone-shaped rock formations were formed by a wedding party that was petrified as a punishment for incest (a brother marrying his sister). This mystical atmosphere attracts many tourists and photographers, alongside spa guests. The surrounding area is fertile and agricultural, and small restaurants nearby serve local grilled meat and traditional flatbreads. Hammam Debagh is easily accessible from the city of Guelma by taxi or your own car. A visit is worthwhile all year round, but in winter, the rising steam above the limestone terraces in cold temperatures is particularly photogenic. Extreme caution is advised as the water literally boils in some places, some locals use this to boil eggs in the natural pools. It is a spectacular nature experience, unparalleled in Algeria.
