Djémila (Algeria)

Weather…

Djémila, formerly known as Cuicul, is a small mountain village in Algeria where some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa are located. It was founded as a colony for Roman veterans by Emperor Nerva between 96 and 98 AD on a strategically important rocky spur at an altitude of 900 meters. The site is uniquely characterized by the adaptation of Roman town planning to a mountainous terrain, featuring two forums, grand basilicas, and a 3,000-seat theater. Notable structures include the Temple of the Septimian family and the Arch of Caracalla, which was constructed in 216 AD to honor the emperor. The city flourished as a trade hub for grain and olive oil before declining after the fall of the Roman Empire and the subsequent Vandal invasion. Its exceptional collection of mosaic pavements and architectural integrity led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, reflecting the grandeur of Roman Numidia.
