Aokas

Aokas is a popular Mediterranean resort town located 25 kilometers east of Bejaia. Visitors are drawn to its long stretches of golden sand, which offer well-suited conditions for swimming and sunbathing during the summer months. The town is flanked by the sea on one side and steep forested hills on the other, creating a striking geographic contrast. The main attraction of Aokas is its natural cave system, discovered accidentally in 1962 during tunnel construction. The Aokas Cave spans 400 meters in length and features complex stalactite and stalagmite formations, alongside a small underground lake. Guided tours are available, providing a cool retreat from the intense summer heat. Local restaurants along the promenade serve fresh seafood and traditional Algerian dishes, such as couscous and chorba. The town is easily accessible via the RN9 national highway connecting Bejaia and Setif. The best time to visit Aokas is between May and September, when the Mediterranean climate is warm and the sea temperature is pleasant for swimming.
