Jijel, a coastal city in eastern Algeria, is renowned for its remarkable Mediterranean location and its surrounding dense forests. The city's history dates back to the Phoenicians, who founded it as Igilgili. During the Middle Ages, Jijel became a significant base for the Barbarossa brothers and served as a strategic port for the Ottoman fleet. The region is famous for the Jijel Corniche, a scenic coastal road running between steep cliffs and turquoise waters. Nearby lies the Taza National Park, noted for its rich biodiversity and the impressive stalactite caves known as the "Grottes Merveilleuses." Economically, the Port of Djen Djen plays a pivotal role as one of Algeria's largest and most modern deep-water ports. Jijel is also a favored tourist destination, appreciated for its pristine beaches and relaxed atmosphere. Despite suffering from a devastating earthquake in 1856, the city has preserved its historical character while evolving into a modern regional administrative and commercial hub.
