Resurrection of Christ Cathedral
The Resurrection of Christ Cathedral in Tirana is the third-largest Orthodox church in Europe and a striking example of modern sacred architecture in Albania. Consecrated in 2012, the structure was built to replace the original cathedral that was destroyed in 1967 during the communist regime's anti-religious campaign. The design blends Byzantine traditions with contemporary elements, featuring a massive golden dome with a diameter of 26 meters that dominates the city skyline. The complex includes the main church, a 46-meter-high bell tower, a cultural center, a library, and a small museum located in the basement. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with magnificent mosaics, most notably the image of Christ Pantocrator in the dome, as well as intricate marble craftsmanship. Serving as the spiritual headquarters of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, the cathedral symbolizes the rebirth of religious freedom after decades of state-enforced suppression.
