Krujë Castle is one of Albania's most significant historical symbols, inextricably linked to the life and legacy of the national hero Skanderbeg. In the 15th century, this fortress served as the epicenter of Albanian resistance against the expanding Ottoman Empire, successfully repelling three massive sieges. Perched on a steep cliff at an elevation of 600 meters, the castle provided a strategic vantage point overlooking the entire region toward the Adriatic coast. Today, the castle complex houses the Skanderbeg Museum, which chronicles the history of the liberation struggles, and an Ethnographic Museum situated in a restored Ottoman residence. Its architecture reflects layers of Illyrian, medieval, and Ottoman influences, showcasing its long-standing defensive importance. The medieval bazaar located below the fortress is among the oldest and best-preserved in the country, remaining a bustling hub for traditional crafts and national heritage.
