Bovilla Lake is an artificial reservoir located northeast of Tirana, serving as the primary source of drinking water for the Albanian capital. Created in 1998 with the construction of a dam on the Terruzë River, the lake is framed by the dramatic limestone peaks of the Dajt mountain range. The rugged landscape, with its steep cliffs plunging into the water, gives the lake a fjord-like appearance and features sweeping panoramic views. While its main function is utility-based, Bovilla has grown into a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. The hiking trail leading to the summit of Mount Gamti is particularly famous for providing the best vantage point overlooking the entire reservoir. Due to its role in the city's water supply, water quality is strictly protected, and activities like swimming or boating are prohibited. The surrounding mountains are home to diverse flora and provide a crucial habitat for birds of prey near the Tirana metropolitan area.

Getting there

The lake is located approximately an hour's drive from Tirana; the final stretch of the approach road is unpaved, extremely dusty, and heavily potholed.

Spring and early summer are well-suited, offering lush green landscapes and comfortable hiking weather before the intense heat and dry conditions of late summer arrive.

The surrounding mountains feature very steep, rocky trails that require light scrambling. The popular path up to the Mount Gamti viewpoint is demanding but well-trodden.

Sturdy hiking boots are essential for the sharp rocks, while plenty of drinking water and rigorous sun protection are necessary since shade is scarce on the ascent.

There is an informal dirt parking area near the restaurant at the base of the dam, though it can become quite crowded and chaotic during sunny weekends.

The viewpoint cliffs have sheer drops without safety barriers, requiring extreme caution. The unpaved access road demands slow driving and a high-clearance vehicle.
