House of Leaves (Albania)

Weather…

The House of Leaves, formally known as the Museum of Secret Surveillance, is located in the heart of Tirana and occupies a building with a dark historical legacy. Originally built in 1931 as a private obstetric clinic, it was seized during the German occupation and later became the headquarters of the Sigurimi, the notorious communist secret police. The museum’s name refers to the climbing plants that once covered its walls, shielding the activities inside from public view. Opened in 2017, the museum provides a chilling insight into the pervasive surveillance and control mechanisms used during the regime of Enver Hoxha. Visitors can view original equipment, including microphones, cameras, and recording devices, alongside documentation detailing the lives affected by state monitoring. It received the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2020 for its role in promoting human rights and historical awareness. The exhibition rooms are preserved in their original state to authentically convey the claustrophobic atmosphere of the Cold War era.
