The Ceraunian Mountains, known in Albanian as Malet e Vetëtimës (Lightning Mountains), stretch along the Ionian coast in southwestern Albania. This coastal range separates the inland regions from the Albanian Riviera and begins at the Llogara Pass, situated at 1,027 meters above sea level. The highest peak of the range is Maja e Çikës, reaching an elevation of 2,044 meters and rising dramatically from the sea. Geologically, the mountains are composed primarily of limestone, which has led to the formation of numerous caves and prominent rock formations. In antiquity, the range was notorious among sailors for sudden storms and lightning strikes attracted by the high peaks. Today, the area is protected within the Llogara National Park, famous for its black pine forests and scenic driving routes. The mountains provide a habitat for golden eagles and chamois, and remain a popular destination for hikers seeking the contrast between alpine environments and the deep blue sea.
