Ballsh is the administrative capital of the Mallakastër region in southwestern Albania, primarily known as the national heart of the country's oil industry. Situated on a ridge overlooking the Gjanica River valley, the town saw significant development in the mid-20th century following the construction of a large-scale oil refinery. Historically, the area surrounding Ballsh is of immense significance, located just a few kilometers from the ancient Illyrian-Epirote city of Byllis, one of Albania's most important archaeological sites. Byllis once featured a massive theater and expansive defensive walls. While modern Ballsh is characterized by its functional industrial architecture, it is also home to notable religious sites like the Monastery of Saint Mary. The town's economy continues to revolve around the processing of domestic crude oil from the surrounding Mallakastër fields.
