Byllis (Albania)

Weather…

Byllis was a significant ancient city in Illyria, built on a strategic 523-meter-high hill overlooking the Vjosa River valley. Founded in the mid-4th century BC, it rapidly developed into the political and administrative center of the Illyrian community of the Bylliones. The city's impressive fortifications stretch over a total length of 2.2 kilometers and enclose a vast area of approximately 30 hectares. Among the most outstanding architectural monuments is the ancient theater from the 3rd century BC, which, with its 40 rows of seats, could accommodate up to 7,500 spectators. In late antiquity, the city experienced a second golden age as a Christian center and episcopal seat, evidenced by the remains of six elaborately designed basilicas from the 5th and 6th centuries featuring magnificent mosaic floors. Today, Byllis is one of Albania's best-preserved archaeological parks, offering unique insights into the fusion of Illyrian, Hellenistic, and Roman urban planning alongside panoramic views reaching the coast.
