Feira Historical Settlement (Zambia)

Weather…

Feira, now known as Luangwa, is situated at the confluence of the Zambezi and Luangwa Rivers and is recognized as the oldest European-style settlement in Zambia. Established by Portuguese traders and gold seekers around 1720, it served as an important market for the trade of ivory, gold, and slaves. The settlement represented the furthest inland reach of Portuguese influence from Mozambique during the 18th century. Although it was abandoned for several decades due to regional instability, it was resettled in the late 19th century as a British colonial administrative post. The ruins of the old Portuguese fortifications and buildings offer a glimpse into the early period of contact between African kingdoms and European mercantilism. Today, the area is a significant historical site and a gateway to the Luangwa Valley’s natural wonders.
